Pentecost 2017: The Amazing Rain of Rose Petals at the Pantheon
Once again during Pentecost, a shower of red rose petals will fall inside the Pantheon of Rome! May 15th , at the end of the Holy Mass to celebrate Pentecost, which is scheduled for 10:30 am, firefighters will reach the top of the dome – 43 metres high – and will drop thousands of red rose petals onto the faithful through the ” eye in the sky “, the wide oculus of 9 metres across that radiates the Pantheon with light.
The celebration, in the Christian tradition, commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Virgin Mary and the Apostles gathered in the Upper Room. In the ancient religious rite dating back to the Middle Ages, the rose represented the Holy Ghost and symbolized the blood shed by the crucifix for the redemption of men. We recommend, to those wishing to see the event live, to arrive before 9.30am. The entrance to the Basilica will be closed when the number of visitors reaches the maximum allowed for the protection and security of all. There are no external screens.
If you can’t be this extraordinary event you can follow it on the official social pages of the Pantheon, that will describe in live real time all the phases of the event:
